Joey was killed on duty at FT. Bragg NC escorting an ambulance to the hospital. He was honored May of 2007 when his name was place on the OFFICER DOWN MEMORIAL in Washington D.C.

ELROD, Mike Of Portage, Michigan Died peacefully on August 13, 2008 at Bronson Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Mike was born November 16, 1957 in Wayne, MI, the son of Donald and Heather (Holmes) Elrod. He graduated from Westland John Glenn High School in 1976 and came to Kalamazoo in 1980 to help his father in managing Century Buick. Mike was employed with several dealerships over the years as a Retail Auto Executive. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing in Michigan and Canada. He was very competitive and enjoyed playing video games with his son Brandon. Mike was preceded in death by his mother Heather Elrod. On August 20, 1983, he was married to Renonda Edwards, who survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters and 1 son, Erin Elrod of Kalamazoo, Kristin Elrod and Brandon Elrod, both of Portage; a granddaughter Lily; his father Donald Elrod and wife Alice of Port St. Lucie, FL; 4 brothers, Terry Lee (Tamara) Elrod of Jackson, Todd Eric Elrod of Westland, Michael (Terri) Hurst of Grass Lake and Mark Hurst of Port St. Lucie, FL; grandmother Claire Niddrie of Port St. Lucie, FL; parents-in-law Herman and Nancy Boltjes of Kalamazoo; brother-in-law Ron Edwards of Clearwater, FL; dearest and closest friends, Scott and LuAnn Fawley and Patti Ketelaar; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and many friends. Services will be held at 11:00 o'clock Monday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. with the Rev. Debra Bashim officiating. Friends may meet the family on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in Mike's memory may be made to the West Michigan Cancer Center. Debra passed away December 4th, 2009 after her battle with cancer. She was diagnosed two years ago, and fought a good fight. Eventually she could fight no more. Debbie was top of her class in 1978.
